Check previous keepers before buying a used car
A previous keeper and ownership history check helps you understand how often a vehicle has changed hands. REGUP shows the number of previous keepers, recorded keeper changes and available V5C certificate history returned for the registration.
A high keeper count is not automatically a fault. Older cars naturally collect more keepers, while a cherished or specialist vehicle may have changed hands several times. The pattern matters: repeated changes over short periods can justify more questions about reliability, condition, paperwork or why buyers moved the vehicle on.
What the ownership history result can show

Use these records alongside the current V5C, service invoices, MOT history and the seller's explanation. Check that dates form a believable timeline and ask about unexplained gaps or rapid changes.
Registered keeper is not the same as legal owner
The V5C names the registered keeper, who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle. It is not proof of legal ownership. A vehicle-history service cannot provide the keeper's name or home address. REGUP only shows non-personal counts and dates supplied by the data provider.
How to use keeper history
Compare the result with the advert and paperwork before travelling or paying a deposit. If the seller claims long-term ownership but the latest keeper change is recent, ask for a clear explanation. Also check finance, stolen, write-off, mileage and plate-change history for a fuller pre-purchase view.
Data coverage varies by vehicle. If the provider does not return a keeper field, REGUP displays Not available rather than treating missing information as a clean result.

Does this check reveal the owner's name or address?
No. REGUP only shows non-personal keeper counts and available change dates. It does not reveal a current or previous keeper's identity or address.
Is a high number of previous keepers always bad?
No. Vehicle age and use matter. Several changes in a short period may deserve questions, but the count alone does not prove a problem.
Is the registered keeper the legal owner?
Not necessarily. The V5C records the registered keeper and is not proof of legal ownership.
What if keeper history is unavailable?
REGUP shows Not available when the provider has not supplied a conclusive keeper field. Never interpret missing data as a clear check.
