What Is a ULEZ Check?
A ULEZ check looks up the vehicle emission data linked to its registration, including the Euro emission standard, CO2 output and fuel type, then compares these against the ULEZ requirements. It uses DVLA vehicle data, which records the emission classification assigned at manufacture. What Are the ULEZ Emission Standards?
The standards are based on the Euro emission classification. Cars must meet these minimums to drive in the ULEZ without charge.

Where Does the ULEZ Apply?
Since August 2023, the London ULEZ covers all London boroughs, operating 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day. The charge applies whether you live in the zone, drive through it, or park on a public road within it. Cameras read number plates automatically and the charge is issued to the registered keeper. The London Assembly Environment Committee publises regular data on the scheme air quality impact.
What About Clean Air Zones Outside London?
Several UK cities run their own Clean Air Zones with separate rules. Active zones include Birmingham, Bath, Bradford and Bristol. The emission standards are usually similar to ULEZ but the charges, exemptions and vehicle classes differ. The Clean Air Zone framework on GOV.UK lists the current zones and their requirements. If you drive in or near a city with a CAZ, check the specific zone rules as well as the vehicle emissions.
