Printed, rounded or defined edges?
| Finish | Character surface | Profile |
|---|---|---|
| Standard 2D | Flat printed black characters | No raised character layer |
| 3D gel | Rounded glossy face | Soft domed edge |
| 4D 3 mm acrylic | Flat glossy black face | Defined 3 mm raised edge |
| 4D 5 mm acrylic | Flat glossy black face | Deeper 5 mm raised edge |
| 4D gel | Rounded gel top on acrylic | Acrylic depth with a domed face |
The millimetres describe character thickness, not the whole backing. Both acrylic depths are glossy; a deeper character is a visual choice rather than a claim of better legal compliance.
Match the finish to your plates
Compare 4D 3 mm and 4D 5 mm for acrylic depth. The printed 2D option has a flat surface. Availability can differ between car, motorcycle, trailer and import layouts. A finish shown for one size is not automatically available for another.
There are no fixed comparison prices here: the builder uses the active catalogue for your plate count, template, finish and extras. Delivery and the complete total are shown before payment.
What stays the same for road use?
Every road-use finish still needs the appropriate black characters, reflective background, spacing, margins and supplier markings. Raised lettering is allowed when the finished plate satisfies the official number plate display rules. Appearance alone does not establish compliance.
Road-use plates need evidence of your name and address and your entitlement to the registration. No account is needed to order. Pay securely, then follow your order link and its evidence instructions; further or original documents may be required. Production starts after payment and document approval.
Frequently asked questions
Are 3D gel and 4D acrylic the same?
No. Gel has a rounded domed face; acrylic has a flat glossy face and defined raised edges. 4D gel combines the two materials.
Should I choose 3 mm or 5 mm acrylic?
Choose 3 mm for a shallower raised profile or 5 mm for more visible depth. Both have glossy faces. Check that your chosen finish is available for the template and vehicle.
Is 5 mm automatically better or more road legal?
No. Depth is a visual preference. Compliance depends on the materials and complete finished layout, not a larger millimetre number.
Why does the price change when I change the plates?
A pair, single front, single rear, motorcycle and trailer can have different base prices. Size supplements and optional extras also affect the total.
