Every free vehicle check runs on UK vehicle records. We use DVLA and DVSA source data where available, with trusted provider data behind the premium checks in a paid report.
REGUP is an independent vehicle checking service and does not claim to be DVLA, DVSA or GOV.UK. A check reports what is held on record. It cannot tell you how a car drives, and it does not replace a mechanical inspection.

Is the free car check really free?
Yes. The MOT history, mileage, tax status and vehicle details cost nothing, need no account and have no limit on how many vehicles you check. You only pay if you want the checks behind them, such as finance, write-off and stolen records.
Can I check a car's history for free?
You can check a large part of it for free, including the full MOT record, the mileage at every test and the tax status. Finance, write-off, stolen and keeper history are not available free anywhere, because that data is licensed rather than public.
Do I need to create an account?
No. Enter a registration and the results appear. An account is only useful if you want to save vehicles or access reports you have paid for.
Can I get all this free on GOV.UK?
You can get MOT history and tax status from the government's own service, including the GOV.UK MOT history service. What you cannot get there is outstanding finance, write-off category, stolen markers, previous keepers or a valuation. We would rather tell you that than pretend otherwise.
Can I run my car check free on a van or motorbike?
Yes. Any vehicle with a UK registration number can be checked, including vans and motorcycles.
How accurate is the free check?
It reflects what is held on official record. Records can take a few days to update after a new MOT or a tax renewal, so if something looks inconsistent, check it against the physical documents.
How many free checks can I run?
As many as you need. If you are comparing several cars, check all of them before you travel to view any of them.
