What you need to know
Short number plates reduce the unused space at the sides of a registration. The characters keep the required size and spacing; the width depends on the registration and selected options. These are physical replacement plates, not a registration number for sale.
Choose a short front plate, rear plate or pair
Choose whether you need both plates or just one replacement, then select Short for the relevant side in the size options. A white plate goes at the front and a yellow plate at the rear. Check the dimensions shown for your registration before ordering.
Measure the mounting area on your car as well as the plate. A shorter plate may expose old fixing holes or marks left by a standard plate. You can keep one side standard and shorten the other when those sizes are available for your selection.
Printed, 3D gel or glossy 4D short plates
The short format describes the plate shape, while the finish describes the characters. Compare flat printed lettering, rounded 3D gel number plates and the crisp raised edges of 4D acrylic number plates. The builder shows the combinations currently available.
Raised-character depth does not change the required registration spacing. Your price updates with the finish, front and rear sizes and extras you select; delivery and the final payable total are confirmed before payment.
Shorter plates still need the correct details
Enter the registration assigned to your vehicle. Shortening a plate does not permit smaller characters, altered spacing or missing supplier and standard markings. Road-use plates must meet the applicable UK number plate rules.

What is a short number plate?

Do short number plates need identity documents?
Yes. Road-use plates require identity and registration entitlement evidence before production, just like standard replacement plates. Shortening the shape does not change those requirements.
