What Is A Vehicle Safety Recall?

A safety recall is a formal notice from a vehicle manufacturer that a specific defect has been found in a batch of vehicles. The defect could affect brakes, airbags, steering, fuel systems, electrical components, seatbelts or emissions equipment.

When a recall is issued, the manufacturer is required to fix the defect free of charge at any franchised dealer. The DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) publishes recall data and works with manufacturers to track completion rates.

You can also check recall notices directly through the DVSA Recall Checker.

What Does This Check Show?

The REGUP recall check searches available DVSA records and returns whether a recall has been issued against the vehicle and whether it has been marked as completed.

Not all recall data is recorded centrally, so the check shows what is available. If a recall appears as outstanding, contact a franchised dealer for that make to arrange the free repair.

For a broader picture of the vehicle before buying, start a free vehicle check which also covers MOT status, tax and mileage.

What Types Of Defect Trigger A Recall?

Manufacturers issue recalls for defects that affect safety or legal compliance. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) coordinates recall activity across the UK industry.

Common categories include:

  • Airbag And Restraint Systems: Faulty airbag inflators, seatbelt pretensioner failures and incorrect deployment triggers.
  • Braking Systems: Brake fluid leaks, ABS sensor faults, parking brake failures and corroded brake lines.
  • Steering And Suspension: Steering column defects, power steering failures and suspension component fractures.
  • Fuel And Fire Risk: Fuel line leaks, engine bay fire risks and faulty fuel pump seals.
  • Electrical Systems: Wiring harness faults, battery management failures and short-circuit risks.
  • Emissions: Software updates required to meet emissions standards. If the vehicle affected, it may show on ULEZ and emissions check.

Why Check Recalls Before Buying A Used Car?

An outstanding recall means the car has a known defect that the manufacturer considers serious enough to fix for free. If the recall has not been completed, the defect is still present. The fix costs nothing at any franchised dealer, so there is no reason not to get it done, but you need to know about it first.

According to the RAC, thousands of vehicles are driven every day with outstanding recalls their owners do not know about.

How Do You Act On A Recall?

  1. Note the recall details from the check result.
  2. Contact any franchised dealer for that vehicle make.
  3. Book the recall work. The repair is free.
  4. Keep the confirmation with your service records. This also helps when you check the MOT history at the next test.

Does A Recall Affect The Car Value?

A completed recall does not reduce value. The defect has been fixed to manufacturer specification at no cost.
An outstanding recall may concern some buyers, but since the fix is free, it is more of a negotiation point than a deal-breaker.

If you want to understand how value is affected more broadly, run a valuation check alongside the recall check.

Can A Car With An Outstanding Recall Pass An MOT?

Yes. The MOT tests the car against safety and emissions standards on the day.
A recall defect may or may not overlap with an MOT testable item. A car can pass its MOT and still have an outstanding recall for a component the test does not cover.
This is why the recall check matters separately. Check MOT history and recall status together for the fullest safety picture.

Is This Check Free?

Yes. The REGUP safety recall check is free.

Enter a UK registration number to see the available recall status from DVSA records. No payment or account is required.

Safety Recall Check FAQs

Is The Safety Recall Check Really Free?

Yes. It uses DVSA data and is included in the free REGUP check at no cost.

Does The Check Show All Recalls?

It shows recalls recorded in the DVSA database. For the most complete picture, also check directly with a franchised dealer for that make.

Who Pays For The Recall Repair?

The manufacturer pays. Recall repairs are carried out free of charge at any franchised dealer for that make.

Can I Check Recalls Without The Registration?

You need the UK registration number. There is no public recall lookup by VIN alone through DVSA.

How Long Do Recalls Last?

There is no formal expiry. Most recalls remain open indefinitely until the work is completed.

Does An Outstanding Recall Make The Car Illegal To Drive?

Not automatically. The car remains legal as long as it is taxed, insured and has a valid MOT. However, driving with a known safety defect is a risk.
